Finding Home at The Lodge: Hank’s Story

In recognition of our 25 years of service, past and current residents and families are sharing their experiences at The Lodge.
"'HOME' that’s what Dad (Hank Stip) called The Lodge. On Halloween, families were encouraged to come by The Lodge in costumes or not. The children were always excited to trick or treat there. After a lifetime of refusing a costume or Halloween traditions, The Lodge staff gently persuaded Hank to participate. I can only imagine his growling and “grrrr” when gently coaxed into participating in The Lodge trick or treat ritual! Although, with that sly little grin, he did threaten to keep all the candy himself!
Dressed in costumes The Lodge provided, he sat in the “treating circle” and enjoyed all little ghosts, goblins, ghouls etc. that came for candy. Each Lodge member held a bowl of candy in their lap and had the opportunity to engage with the trick or treaters. In this way, the members were able to participate in this long tradition of fun and frivolity with their families.
Marlin, Lodge Administrative Assistant, was his special angel, as our family began to refer to her. We were always surprised that none of his 5 daughters could convince him to try many things, but Marlin could! Special celebrations, special activities and field trips, even haircuts!"
